History of the Inn
The Old Cross is in a Victorian building which has been an inn since 1865. Originally called the Rattray Hotel, it was owned by William Matthews, a grocer from Broughty Ferry, with James Grant, vintner, as the tenant. In 1870, the hotel changed hands, and was owned by the Hill Whitson family of Parkhill House
In 1905, the George family took over and the inn was renamed The George. The family had previously run the Rattray Inn, which is now a private dwelling. In 1945, George Rose became the new owner and members of the family ran the inn for almost 50 years.
In 1994, after a short period when Roy Morris was the owner, the inn was bought by Ian Ewan and was renamed the Park Inn.
Another name changed followed in 2004 when the building was bought by Elaine Mathers and renamed the Old Cross Inn and Restaurant, with an extensive program of alterations and refurbishment undertaken which complimented the style and character of the 140 year old building.
Current proprietors Claire and Liam Leask took over in April 2006.
