Storybook Glen Bed & Breakfast
Storybook Glen, a northwest Arkansas bed and breakfast, located in the Boston Mountains of southern Madison County, in the town of Pettigrew. About half and hour to Mulberry Mountain, Old Applegate Place and Turner Bend, Storybook Glen caters to those who want a stay in the backcountry with up-town accommodations. We are centrally located in the Ozarks Region of hiking trails and waterfalls in the Tim Ernst Guides and close to many in the Buffalo region too. We are situated on eighty wooded acres located 55 miles southeast of Fayetteville off Highway 16, 3 miles into the Ozark National Forrest.
Long standing tradition leaves no room for TV reception at the glen. Daytime entertainment and recreation is derived from taking advantage of the natural wonders and activities found in abundance. Evenings are spent reading, gabbing, or watching a video.
There are extensive gardens on the grounds, first built as a cutting garden with the viewing public in mind, now planted as a combination flower/vegetable garden.
There are walking paths and hiking trails on the grounds and throughout the National Forrest. If you would like a guide, let us know.
There are scenic wonders - waterfalls, cliffs, caves, rock formations, flora and fauna - not to mention the panoramic views of hills and hollers folding in on one another as far as the eye can see. It is truly awesome.
Canoeing can be enjoyed on the nearby Mulberry River, offering about 40 miles of good canoeing, kayaking, and rafting when the river is high.
Horse training and trail riding can be observed or participated in, with the opportunity for private instruction.
Rappelling and climbing is available and offered as a special package. We do not use extreme technique.
Simpler Times at Storybook Glen
You never know what might be happening at the Glen, but one thing you can be sure won't be there, and that's television. This is mostly a result of choice, but also we are so down in the 'holler,' reception would be very poor, and that is mostly out of choice too. TV gums up life, and more than one visitor has commented on how their life came into perspective, and once complicated problems seemed much simpler and easier to resolve. Life without TV breeds a different type of person, and a whole different outlook. Simpler yes, but very exciting. So if you want to experience the spice of life with no plug-in drug, this is the place to come. We do have DVD players, and a library of videos.
There are many simple pleasures to be found in The Glen, some restful and relaxed, some more active, and some downright adventuresome. Some can be done independently: Walking or jogging our many country roads, Hiking trails and along creeks, Hikes to area waterfalls & scenic wonders (guidebooks available), Canoeing on the Mulberry River - backpack lunch can be included, Local backcountry bluegrass, Drive the grand canyon of the Ozarks - picnic lunch can be included, Attend The Ole Applegate Place Craft Fair on Mulberry Mountain in the fall and all the Mulberry Mountain festivals too, Stroll and view extensive gardens on site, Participate if desired in garden and farm chores, Read in quiet corners, write, compose, prepare, Play with the dogs - Pamper the cats - Pet the horses, Take our worship walk, Learn to make homemade soup and yeast bread.
There are many other activities available requiring more supervision and we do include these at an additional charge. They are listed below: Trail Riding, using your own horse or ours, Riding instruction, Horse training and/or instruction, Buggy and Carriage rides,
'The Round Coral of Life,' Guided Back Country Gardens tours of neighboring gardens, Guided tours to scenic wonders, Rappelling and Climbing (on site low obstacle course coming soon), Canoeing with a guide,
Personality Profile,
There are other occasional activities you may happen upon during your stay - or you may request them: Home theater, Making music together, Ballroom Dancing, Cooking from Scratch, Chopping Wood for wood heat,
Campfires with skits and songs, Hobbit Candles - fun for everyone at least once, Puzzles, Special Holiday Traditions.
Horse Facilities
There are plenty of wooded paths, trails, and untraveled dirt roads for trail rides, and there is also a large unfenced arena. Instruction and clinics have been given here, and usually there is a farrier present. We have a horse barn, with 8 stalls and sometimes a few horses to put in those stalls unless they are at the top farm.
If you bring your own horses, you'll need a 4WD vehicle for pulling your trailer, as the road is steep and graded infrequently (or you can park up top and ride them down the hill), and of course you should bring your own feed and hay. Negative Coggins required.
