The Bay of Fundy Inn

The Bay of Fundy Inn is open for business. The heritage home in Westport, Brier Island offers year around accommodation for birders, whale watching enthusiasts and other visitors to Nova Scotia's Gateway to the Bay of Fundy.

The Bay of Fundy Inn on Brier Island, Nova Scotia is the newest 'accommodation' addition to Mariner Cruises. Now travellers, birders and whale watching enthusiasts can enjoy a Mariner Cruise, explore Brier Island and return to quiet Nova Scotia accommodation, a comfortable room in a century old home overlooking Westport Harbour.

The large, two-story Victorian house complete with car garage, large living room and dining area has been extensively renovated. The property offers guests considerable privacy and room for children to play and explore.

There are three rooms at the Bay of Fundy Inn - two rooms with queen-size beds, one room with one double bed. Each room will accommodate two persons comfortably and includes access to the common living room (well stocked with books and magazines) and T.V. room.

Like many traditional inns in Nova Scotia, guests at the Bay of Fundy Inn share two large bathrooms with other guests - one four piece bathroom and a second three-piece bathroom are available.

Our Nova Scotia accommodation facility is open the year around. During the summer whale-watching season reservations are strongly recommended.

Finback Whales, Minke Whales and Harbour Porpoises are the first to arrive in the spring. In June, the Humpbacks begin to return; by late June they are abundant, and White-sided Dolphins are often seen. By mid-July all five species are commonly sighted and usually remain until late fall.

Mariner Cruises has been offering Nova Scotia whale watching and birding tours of the Bay of Fundy for over a decade.

We invite you to join us for an exciting sea adventure from Brier Island, the Whale Watching Capital of Nova Scotia!

You'll love our island, the magnificent mammals and rare bird species you'll see, and the friendly people you'll meet.

Our Cruises

It is very rare that a whale is not found on a Mariner Cruise, Nova Scotia whale watching tour. On this tour several different whale species were observed on the same adventure, to the delight of both passengers and crew.

The waters off Brier Island and the Bay of Fundy are the summer feeding ground, nursery and play area for dozens of marine species. Strong tidal currents bring nutrients close to the surface, increasing the productivity of plankton. The plankton attracts large schools of herring and mackerel, which in turn provide food for whales, dolphins, seabirds and a colony of seals.

The number and variety of shore and seabirds in and around Brier Island are nothing short of spectacular. In the fall, the island is a popular stopover for hundreds of migrating shorebirds and raptors.

The prestigious adventure tour company, Field Guides International Incorporated of Austin, Texas suggests birders can expect 'the unexpected - Brier Island offers unparalleled opportunities to study shorebirds up close.'

In the late spring the Finback Whales, Minke Whales and Harbour Porpoises are the first to arrive from their southern breeding grounds. In June, The Humpback Whales return, and by late June, the Humpbacks are abundant and White-sided Dolphins are often observed. By mid-July all five species are commonly sighted and usually remain until fall.

The endangered North Atlantic Right Whale, White-beaked Dolphins and Pilot Whales are ocassionally observed on our Nova Scotia whale watching tours. Beluga, Sperm and Blue Whales are known to inhabit the region, but are rarely seen.

There are also sightings of Bluefin Tuna, Sea Turtles, Ocean Sunfish and Basking Sharks on our Nova Scotia whale watching tours; bird species include Atlantic Puffins and several varieties of ganets, petrels, shearwaters and phalaropes.

It is important to note that each Mariner Cruise, Nova Scotia whale watching tour of the Bay of Fundy, provides an opportunity (and often, a once in a lifetime opportunity) to observe firsthand some of the largest and rarest bird and animal species in the world. Observing their behaviour, in their natural environment is a thrill and rare privilege.

Our captains and crew are committed to the preservation of this important eco-system and to providing a unique sea adventure with the minimum of disturbance to these magnificent creatures.

A Mariner Cruise also provides outdoor enthusiasts with an opportunity to experience the famous Bay of Fundy tides (the highest in the world), view ancient basalt rock formations, observe the Peter's Island Bird Sanctuary and gain insight into the local history and geology of the region.

All cruises are narrated by experienced local naturalists and include a complimentary drink and snack (a hot or cold beverage and homemade muffins) served during the tour.
