Wisbech, capital of the fens, with a population of about 19,000 about 20 miles the northeast of city of Peterborough. It is a market town of great character and historical importance. It has a great deal to offer a visitor, from its Georgian architecture, to its church and museum, also an interesting museum on octavia hill, who was the co-founder of the national trust and pioneer of social housing.
The draining of the fens brought prosperity to Wisbech with the fertile land and the wealthy merchants built their rows of elegant house along the banks of the river nene. These buildings are among the finest Georgian streets in England and have been used for the filming of dickens films.
Wisbech is this year celebrating the bi-centenary of the abolition of slavery. Because Thomas Clarkson who was the main force in this was born in Wisbech and there is a memorial built by Sir Gilbert Scott in the town centre. There is a delightful church dating back to the 12th century also there is a wonderful crescent and castle .the town is well worth a visit and is becoming a really popular property hot spot.
