Also nestling in the Sid Valley is the pretty villages of Sidford & sidbury, with excellent shops, inns and tea rooms, just 1.5 miles form Sidmouth esplanade, a pleasant walk along the River Sid.

The heart of the town is busy and attractive and it is well worth browsing amongst the range of quality shops and listed buildings. The esplanade overlooks a pebble beach and tranquil seaside activities. To the western end a jutting sandstone promontory surmounted by Jacobs Ladder and the impressive floral display of Connaught Gardens separates the esplanade from the mile long beach of seawashed sand of western Beach.
