The Barley House

The Barley House is situated in the South Hams village of East Charleton, midway between Dartmouth and Salcombe and just 2 miles from the ancient market town of Kingsbridge at the head of the Salcombe Estuary.

The Barley House was originally part of the main farm in the area - and was used to stable horses on the ground floor and store barley upstairs.

The horses hauled stone from a nearby quarry, some of which went into the construction of the barn, which looks out over open, rolling countryside typical of the South Hams.

The conversion of The Barley House was completed in 2006 to a high specification based on a contemporary design. The two bedrooms that are used for guests are furnished to a high standard.

Breakfasts use locally sourced produce and include home made jams and marmalade and are served in an imposing double height beamed room on the first floor with lovely rural views

This area of Devon with coast, countryside and moor has something for every taste and is uniquely beautiful with the majority of the area designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Three of the beaches in the South Hams have been awarded Blue Flag status and six the 'Rural Beach Award'.

The area attracts people with a wide range of interests, for example,
- miles of coastal paths for walkers
- Slapton Ley and East Prawle are poplar with bird watchers
- there are some spectacular golf courses, such as Bigbury, Thurlestone and Dartmouth
- Dartmoor and the moorland villages are an easy drive
- for those with an interest in Britain's heritage there are some fascinating National Trust properties to visit, for example Coleton Fishacre a home of the D'Oyly Cartes (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame); Greenway on the river Dart, one of Agatha Christie's homes; Castle Drogo is slightly further afield but of interest as the last 'proper' castle to be built in Britain, designed by Lutyens.

There are a surprisingly high number of excellent places to eat. Almost every village has a pub or restaurant and nearly every one serves good, sometimes great, food.
