West House B&B
The Victorian cottage is completely self-contained, so it is a 'home-from-home'.
It offers two double rooms, which; at the moment share the bathroom, and one twin bedded room with ensuite bathroom. Two of the bedrooms have their original fireplaces.
There is a comfortable lounge with 'freeview' TV, and a well-equipped kitchen (one thing that is NOT Victorian) with fridge-freezer, microwave, cooker, washer etc. It is well stocked with crockery, cutlery, glassware and other kitchen utensils, so that you can prepare your own evening meals if you wish. The lounge has its original cast iron range - spruced up after its recent renovation. The fire has warmed many a guest after a day out in the dales or on the moors...'Lovely and welcoming after a soggy day's walking - esp. the fire stoked ready for our return, .. ' (A comment from our visitors' book)
All rooms have wifi.
There is plenty of off-road parking and hard standing at the back of the property - a place to sit and maybe have a BBQ in the evening.
There is a small children's play area, large playing field and tennis court in the village.
There is an excellent pub/restaurant a short walk away, which has a take-away option, and a mobile cuisine on a Wednesday evening, which serves a range of dishes from fish and chips to chicken in Stilton sauce.
So, as you can see, your stay here can be very flexible.
North Cowton is within easy reach of the market towns of Northallerton, Richmond, (with its castle, theatre and riverside walks) Bedale and Leyburn, with their interesting specialist shops, stunning scenery of the dales and the highest pub in England! This is also the countryside where much of All Creatures Great and Small was filmed. There are examples of Roman, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Norman history right on our doorstep.
Towards the east are the North Yorks. Moors National Park and on to the coast - Redcar, Saltburn (a popular Victorian destination - the cliff lift still survives) Scarborough and Whitby (with its Captain Cook connection) are within travelling distance. There is a monument to Captain Cook atop a very windy hill! Peaceful quietude can be found at the abbeys of Rievaux and Fountains, The North Yorks. Moors Railway (steam) runs between Pickering and Goathland - Heartbeat country (sadly no longer filmed there)
Flamingoland and Lightwater Valley offer children and adults alike plenty of fun and excitement.
The city of York is well worth a visit - with its ancient walls, Viking Museum, Railway museum, Minster, boat trips on the River Ouse, quaint cobbled streets, shops and out-of-town shopping areas.
To the North, the Metro Centre is under an hour away.
For younger children, there are two animal attractions, where they can feed guinea pigs and lambs, and wash a pig, amongst other things!
Fishing, golf, windsurfing, scuba diving are some of the sports available in the locality.
There is something for everyone in this lovely setting, and a comfortable 'home-from-home' at the end of a busy day.
Of course we want you to enjoy your stay, and anything more that we can do (within reason!)to make that happen, we will try to do.
...'Thanks for a relaxing, comfortable stay. A lovely change from the city, and three-course breakfast set us up nicely for the day, and being veggies appreciated the effort to make us something nice. A real home from home!'.... Wrote guests from Bristol.
