Heartbeat
Heartbeat is a long running British TV police drama series set in the 1960s. It is filmed in North Yorkshire, particularly on the moors, coastlines and villages around Whitby. It was first aired on British television in April 1992 and to date over 370 episodes have been made. It is popular in many European countries, including Sweden , Norway, Finland and Estonia. Heartbeat has also been aired in Canada, New Zealand and Australia.
Heartbeat is popular because the storylines revolve around the lives of a group of police officers in the 1960s and represents good family viewing and an invaluable insight into the swinging British culture of the Sixties, particularly community life in a small Northern village in years gone by. Sixties pop music is prominent throughout each episode - famous bands and singers such as the Beatles, Buddy Holly, and Freddie and the Dreamers.
Many of the episodes take place in the fictional village of Aidensfield which is the real-life village of Goathland, a village just a few miles from Whitby. Goathland is a beautiful, picturesque village and many of the series landmarks can be seen, including the Aidensfield Stores, Scripps garage/funeral directors, the Aidensfield Arms pub and the railway station, which forms part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.
