Primrose Cottage Bed And Breakfast
Primrose Cottage is a warm and friendly family run establishment. A typically English country cottage standing in approximately half and acre of landscaped gardens, tucked away in the tiny conservation village of Little Oakley. It is built of local stone and dates from around the 17c but local historians believe it to be earlier as some of the foundations appear to be Norman and as the lovely 13c church of St Peter's is nearby this may well be true.
In 1986 we purchased the cottage, part of the Duke of Buccleuch's estate at nearby Boughton House, and over several years added to it upwards and outwards. All work undertaken has been completed very sympathetically by my husband and myself and has been a labour of love for both of us, we have kept the true character of the cottage by exposing oak beams, window seats and inglenook fireplace with original Salt Hole not unlike the one at nearby Rockingham Castle but of course on a smaller scale..
Guests normally eat in the dining room heated by log fires in winter or in summer weather permitting often chose to eat outdoors in one of the secluded areas of our pretty flower filled gardens.
We have a large cottage garden with fishpond and a stream where guests often sit watching the wildlife in and around the pond. Adjoining the garden there is a small paddock, where at the bottom Harpers brook runs by, often frequented by kingfishers. The paddock is used for growing fruit and vegetables for our own and guests use and housing our small flock of chickens, with strange names given by the grandchildren.
The cottage has a large drive with parking for several cars.
Little Oakley is situated 5 miles to the south of Corby and 5 miles north of Kettering. Close to the historic market towns of Oakham, Uppingham, Market Harborough, Stamford, Peterborough and Oundle. Visit Rockingham Castle, Kirby Hall and Boughton House. Lady Diana's ancestral home at Althorp, Burghley House.
There is fishing at Eyebrook Reservoir, Grafham Water and Rutland Water, where watersports, cycling and bird watching may also be enjoyed. (Red Kites once extinct in Britain but now reintroduced nearby in a breeding programme can be seen almost daily soaring over our garden and fields surrounding our cottage). For the gardeners amongst us, their is Barnsdale Gardens created by the late great Geoff Hamilton, and for the race lovers Rockingham Speedway is only a five minute drive away from Primrose Cottage. Whatever your pleasure it is sure to be found in or around the area.
