Butcombe Farm

Butcombe Farm offers quality Country House bed and breakfast and self catering accommodation in beautiful rural North Somerset, an ideal setting for a relaxing rural vacation.

Not far from Bristol Airport, you can also stay with us before or after your Flight, parking your car here safely while you are away. We will also drive you to, and collect you from, the Airport.

Set amid 30 acres of field and woodland, Butcombe Farm is a grade II listed house, dating from the fourteenth century and commanding a splendid view across the valley to the Mendip Hills.

A sympathetic restoration of the house and surrounding farm buildings, which commenced in 1986, has led to the creation of a holiday setting combining modern and convenient facilities with the peace and tranquillity of a rural environment.

Bed & Breakfast in the Old Manor House ...

Most of the original features of the farmhouse have been preserved to give the house its' character and charm. These include exposed oak beams, three inglenook fireplaces, a Tudor Court room and 'garderobe' - where Judge Jeffrey's is believed to have held court - and the old dairy on the west wing, with stone walls and flagstone floor, which now serves as the breakfast room.

The individually furnished rooms are all centrally heated, have en-suite bathrooms and are fitted with colour television, radio alarm and tea and coffee making facilities.

Three double rooms are on the first floor of the main house and two larger rooms, each with a double and single bed, are in the grounds, nestled among the cottages. All bathrooms have bath and shower.

The Court Suite is also available. This is the original 'Master's Quarters', and features the four poster bed, a seating area and power/ massage shower.

The comfortable guest lounge provides a relaxing environment for reading, watching television or enjoying a quiet drink and conversation.

Please note that we operate a non-smoking policy in the rooms and public areas.

Bristol and Bath are close by, with museums, exhibitions, architectural and historical treasures too numerous to detail here.

Within easy drive are the cathedral city of Wells; the pagan centre of Glastonbury, with its' legends of King Arthur; the mysteries of Cheddar and Wookey Hole caves; the enigma of Stone Henge; and the treasure of stately homes like Bowood House.

Somerset has many other secrets waiting to be discovered. The peat extraction from the moors dating back to the iron age; the natural history and wildlife of the moors and levels; the ancient willow industry; and medieval settlements like Dunster, with its' fascinating castle.

There are several golf courses nearby, providing a range of games to suit all levels. Cycle hire is possible in Wells, boating on the Avon and Kenet canals and, for a more unusual adventure, why not try rock climbing, caving, orienteering, archery, go-karting and even hot air ballooning.

Close by, Blagdon Lake offers excellent Trout fishing and we have a freezer to take your catch, should you be successful on the lake.

For the children, there are several animal farms, theme parks, the Tropicana outdoor pool and Sealife Aquarium at Weston-Super-Mare, Bristol Ice Rink and Butlins at Minehead.

The Setting ..

Butcombe Farm nestles on the side of the valley, in ana area of natural beauty, facing up to the Mendip Hills opposite.
It currently stands in 30 acres, though in the prime of its' life as a working farm, it owned 300 acres of the surrounding fields.

The outdoor, heated swimming pool is usually open from May to September. Set in a courtyard with a southerly aspect, the area is also used throughout the day and early evening for sunbathing and drinks.

Overlooking the pool is the gymnasium room, containing exercise bike, multi-gym, free weights, shower and toilet.

At the top of the orchard is the games room with table tennis, darts and pool table. Also available is croquet, and a range of board games and jigsaw puzzles.

Within an easy drive are the historic port of Bristol, with Brunels' S S Great Britain and Clifton Suspension Bridge; Bath and its' glorious Georgian architecture and Roman Spa Baths; and the delightful town of Wells, with its' magnificent medieval cathedral.

Nearby are the spectacular Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole - both famous for their caves; the Victorian seaside resort of Weston-Super-Mare; and Glastonbury, with its' pagan heritage, the famous Abbey and Tor and the legend of King Arthur.

In addition to exploring the local countryside on foot or touring by car, opportunities for activity abound with fishing on the nearby Blagdon, Berrow and Chew Valley Lakes, horse riding at several local stables and clay pigeon shoots at various sites close by.

Pubs abound locally, serving good food and beer. Among the best are the Queen Adelaide in Blagdon and the Carpenters Arms in Stanton Wick.

A warm and friendly welcome awaits you in these congenial surroundings.
