River Park Farm Bed & Breakfast

River Park Farm is a delightful 17th century West Sussex tile hung farmhouse whose origins can be traced back to the early 16th century, set in a quiet rural location a mile away from the nearest public road. The house is thought to be built on the site of a former monastery, of which all that now remains is the 4 acre carp fishing lake lying adjacent to the house. The large garden is simple, with lawns, wonderfully scented old fashioned roses in May & June and a small vegetable garden set amidst the surrounding trees.

The Moss family have been welcoming guests to their home for bed and breakfast accommodation for 30 years. The present proprietor is Melanie Moss, daughter of Pat and Nick, who ran the B&B until 2002. The two guest bedrooms are prettily decorated with traditional country cottage charm, and both have private bathrooms. Breakfast is taken in the dining room where guests can enjoy a full English breakfast whilst trying to spot the variety of bird life that visits the garden. Before bed, linger outside to enjoy the clarity of the night sky and the silence of the landscape.

River Park Farm comprises 350 acres of mixed arable and livestock farmland set on the edge of the picturesque South Downs in West Sussex. The main crops during the last few years have been wheat, barley, beans and potatoes.

We also keep a flock of our own chickens which provide a ready supply of delicious free range eggs - just try the cooked breakfast and find out!

Due to the changing nature of farming in the 21st century, the farm has diversified somewhat in recent years and has now been accepted as a member of the Countryside Stewardship scheme.
There is an abundance of wildlife in the locality and if you take a stroll around dusk you are likely to encounter wild deer and hear the owls and nightingales calling in the woods nearby.

Things to do in the area

Walking

The farm is ideally placed for those keen on walking. Many good walks can be followed from the house and we are within easy reach of the South Downs Way which runs from Winchester to Eastbourne. We can provide packed lunches and advise on routes (for all abilities) on request!

Cycling

The quiet nature of the local lanes and villages make for excellent cycling whether you fancy a short, gentle ride or a more strenuous excursion. The local villages all have good pubs if a break is required! Secure storage for bikes is available at the farm.

Riding

There is a good selection of local riding schools which cater for all abilities and will allow you to explore the local countryside.

Fishing

Fishing is available on the 4 acre carp lake adjacent to the house, for which day permits are available on request. Fly fishing and fishing on the banks of the river Lod are also nearby.

Nature

Keen ornithologists will delight at the variety of bird life around the farm. Recent sightings include kestrels, buzzards, sparrowhawks and various types of owl. Also swans, herons and grebes can be seen on the lake (all these birds are seasonal). In the spring and early summer the woodlands are carpeted with bluebells, orchids and primroses.

Eating Out

Midhurst, Petworth, Haslemere and the surrounding villages have a good selection of places to eat, from small pubs to exclusive restaurants. Please ask for our recommendations.

A Small Selection of Places of Interest

Petworth Park and House, Cowdray Castle ruins and Polo park, Uppark, Parham House and Gardens, Leonardslee, Nymans, Denmans & West Dean Gardens, Weald & Downland Museum, Arundel Castle, Lurgashall Wineries, Historic Chichester,
