The Old Rectory, Lacock

The Old Rectory .. experience an elegance of a bygone era at this imposing Grade II listed house, situated two minutes stroll from the beautiful and famous village of Lacock. They say 'location, location, location' ... we've got it!

Built in 1866, The Old Rectory is a superb example of Victorian gothic architecture. Now a delightful family home set in it's own grounds with croquet lawn and tennis court, it offers a real taste of English country life. Beyond the stables are fields and footpaths leading to the medieval village of Lacock.

Play the Broadwood piano or just relax in the drawing room which overlooks the grass tennis court and orchard.

The house boasts many original features such as mullioned windows, creeper-clad walls, stained glass windows and an ecclesiastical bell!

A guardian angel is at the pinnacle of the house next to our Latin inscription - 'He who listens, learns most'.

There's ample private and safe car and bicycle parking.

The Rectory offers large elegant bedrooms (two with four poster beds). Each provides en-suite or private facilities, colour TV, hairdryer and hospitality tray. All have lovely views of the garden, tennis court or orchard.

A ground-floor room is available for the less abled and children and babies are all welcome.

In the antique-filled dining room a full English or continental breakfast is served and we are delighted to have been awarded the Wiltshire Breakfast plaque for using locally produced foods to the best effect.

We cater for vegetarians as well.

Guests are most welcome to stroll in the garden or enjoy a drink at the front of the house overlooking the tennis court with trees lining the driveway, or just relax on the patio overlooking the orchard and summer house.

Maybe you will see our horses in the paddock.

Families are most welcome and children can play with the dogs or use the climbing frame in the garden. A travel cot and high chair are also provided.

Smoking ... SORRY, NO SMOKING.

The Surrounding Area

Lacock is a charming village set on the edge of the Cotswolds with many traditional yellow stone houses. Yet it also offers older properties too, some dating from the 14th century with the typical Tudor black and white properties. Consequently, the village is used for many historical drama films such as Pride & Prejudice and Harry Potter.

The village also offers some excellent pubs and restaurants just a stroll away from The Old Rectory. The George pub featuring its famous dog in the wheel fire and The Sign of the Angel with its excellent cuisine are a must. The village also boasts tea rooms, an excellent jewellery shop, antique shop, beautician and bakery.

Also in the village is the 13th-Century Lacock Abbey, a gem of the National Trust, where William Fox Talbot lived. He was a pioneer of photography and inventor of the negative.

The Abbey and photographic museum are open to the public as are other attractions such as Bowood House, Corsham Court, Dyrham Park, Stourhead Gardens and Longleat House and Safari Park. Wiltshire is well known for its ancient connections. Also to be seen are the 'white horses' on the downs while the nearby village of Avebury is well worth a visit.

As well as being close to the neighbouring villages of Castle Combe and Biddestone, Lacock is in the ancient county of Wiltshire, where Avebury and Stonehenge are of great significance. It is also just 12 miles from the world heritage city of Bath, 6 miles from J17 of the M4 and 2 hours from London. Salisbury, Oxford, the coast and the Cotswolds are all within an hour and a half's drive.

The City of Bath, a world heritage City, is not to be missed. Its beautiful Georgian architecture provides an excellent backdrop to the speciality shops, museums, Abbey and of course the famous Roman Baths and Pump Rooms. If its antiques you're after, Bath, Tetbury and Warminster are certainly places to visit.
