Veliko Tarnovo is a town with a rich historical past. The first signs of life are found on Trapezitsa hill and go back to 3rd millennium BC. Remains, found on Tsarevets hill, date from the end of the Bronze Age (13th century BC). The Thracians have been the first inhabitants, whose settlement continues to exist until the end of the Bronze Age. The next settlers have been the Byzantines. During the 8th century AC there has been a big Slavic settlement here. During the 10th century the three hills are densely populated and in 12th century Veliko Tarnovo turns into a well fortified town and an important economic centre.
The origin of the name is connected to the Slavic word tern and during the centuries it modifies into Ternov, Tarnov, Tarnovgrad, Tarnovo and Veliko Tarnovo in the end, which aims to emphasize its greatness and beauty (veliko-great).
