The village

Oberschaeffolsheim is an Alsatian village marked by history with its beautiful old farms, its half-timbered houses, its stork nest ... Sometimes french, sometimes german over the centuries, its identity is very strong...
History :
Since the beginning of its history, which dates back to 788 with the first name Schaftofesheim, our village was subject to numerous changes. He had many conflicts, from its geographical location and the political and economic issues in the region...
Until the mid-seventeenth century, Alsace is part of the Germanic Empire. In 1648, Alsace became french and, in 1870, with the war between France and Germany, it turns again on the German side.
During the First World War, young people of Oberschaeffolsheim are mobilized in the German army. Then finally, in 1918, Alsace becomes French.
This belonging is once again short-lived: in 1939, the region is once again occupied by the neighboring nation. During this war, an Italian prisoner, Antonio Bertola, is sent to the Petit Schelishans to work the fields and care for horses. . . See Antonio come back here.
Since 1945 Alsace and our village are permanently attached to France. .
Today, with its small school, her nice church, its inevitables storks, it city hall park, and it quiet bike path, our little village as typical regional charm and welcomes you with open arms!

Culture

Christmas Markets is a great event in Alsace that really puts you into the Christmas spirit. Strasbourg and lots of small villages are a genuine delight during the festivities of Christmas. The Christmas market time extends from late November to Christmas and even into the New Year (Strasbourg). The streets are decorated with many small trees and lights: delightful decorations so that the magic of Christmas is everywhere. Everywhere, at each Christmas market, you will have the opportunity to sample specialties from Alsace directly in the street like the traditional sweets prepared at home or Glühwein (warm wine prepared with spices).
For Strasbourg you will find the details of events taking place from November 25th to December 31th, 2010

You will find in Strasbourg the European Parliament, the Council of the European Union and the European Court of Human Rights.

New-York, Genève and Strasbourg are the only cities on earth where there are international institutions without being country capital cities. The choice for Strasbourg as european capital city is not just a coincidence but it is the symbol of reconciliation between people and the future of Europe.

It is also the opportunity to discover prestigious contemporary architecture.
