Ideal base for touring Glenveagh National Park and Castle is home to one of the two large herds of red deer are completely wild a 40km fence restricts the herd within Glenveagh. The hills are covered mainly with purple moor grass and species of heather, but the yellow flowers and tormentil and bog asphodel and the little pink lousewort are easily found.

The most frequently encountered bird on the uplands is the Meadow Pipit, with Stonechats, Red Grouse. Revens and occasional Peregrines and Merlins to be seen. The Golden Eagle has been re-introduced to Ireland, facilitated by Glen veagh National Park. The project is on going.

A large area of woodland has been fenced off to allow young trees to survive the grazing deer and here woodland mosses and filmy ferns grow luxuriantly as in most western Irish woods. Woodland bird life includes Siskins, Tree creepers, Wood Warbles and Crossbills.

Locally we have the GAP walking trail a lovely walk along forest and continue on down to the Lake.

Glenties town won several prizes including the Tidy Town competition on 5 occasions.
