Alligator Creek Bed & Breakfast
Located just 20 minutes drive from all the attractions of Townsville, 5 minutes from the wonderful Billabong Sanctuary and 2 minutes from the Bowling Green Bay National Park our environmentally friendly Bed and Breakfast allows you to get full enjoyment from the area, while providing a peaceful sanctuary.
Our comfortable solar-powered home is set in 5 acres, just 2 Km off the main highway south of Townsville. Beautiful Alligator Creek meanders through the property which we share with a wide variety of birds and wildlife. Wallabies and possums are regular visitors while resident birds include a pair of Bush Stone Curlews who often have an egg or youngster in their care. The gorgeous Sunbirds occasionally make nests around the house and a large population of frogs and lizards is testament to the care we give to our stunning environment.
Accommodation
Guest accommodation consists of 2 bedrooms with queen, king or twin beds and plenty of wardrobe space, plus a newly-renovated bathroom (bathrobes are provided as are toiletries). Two indoor sitting areas are available to guests and there are ample places around the property for you to sit and enjoy the surroundings. Our pool is available for those who want some exercise or a leisurely splash, and because it has a shade-sail in summer and solar blanket in winter it is usable year-round.
To enhance your peaceful experience and to encourage guests to get to know each other we do not have televisions in the rooms but TV and DVDs plus a variety of games and books are available for guest use.
Guests are welcome to roam around our gardens and orchards or walk quietly through the wildlife areas. Most of the property is flat and easily accessible but the wildlife habitat near the creek is sloping and left unmowed so appropriate footwear is necessary.
Breakfasts
We believe that our guests should have a choice of breakfast, and as far as possible you will be offered dishes grown in our own garden or produced locally. These will include, for example, home-grown pesticide-free tomatoes and herbs, home-made yoghurt, home-made jams and marmalades from our own fruit, home-baked bread and fresh or preserved fruits. Depending on the season you may be offered mangoes (our main produce) or such delights as mulberries, pawpaw, carambola, grumichama or dragon fruit. We have vegetarian and gluten-free options available as required.
We will serve you freshly-brewed tea or coffee grown near Cairns, and depending on availability, the milk on your cereal will be from the contented Fresians from a family-owned dairy in the Atherton Tablelands (the sort of milk we remember from our childhoods, with cream on the top, YUM!).
There are three eateries close by for lunch or dinner, offering choices from burger and chips to steaks, oysters and everything in between.
Your hosts
Your hosts, Helen and Colin Holmes, originally from England, have lived in Australia for more than twenty years, residing in Victoria, then New South Wales before moving to Alligator Creek eight years ago. We have travelled extensively in Europe and lived for a short while on the West Coast of USA. When our children left home we decided to leave Sydney and our full time jobs and move to a quieter life near Townsville.
The property originally contained just mango trees and a few gums and creek natives but after planting hundreds of trees and shrubs we now provide diverse habitats and have seen the wildlife increase greatly. We feel that this place is so beautiful we ought to share it with others.
Hope to see you soon!!!
