The Stables B&B, a place to relax & unwind

Nestled in the heart of Knapdale Forest above Loch Sween on the beautiful West Coast of Scotland is The Stables B&B. This rural location is ideal for touring, wildlife, history and archaeology, cycling and walking, horse riding and fishing, art and photography, or just total relaxation.

The property is a converted stable block which previously formed part of a 19th century hunting lodge. Guests have access to a private lounge/dining room with log burning stove and comfortable furnishings. The two spacious double bedrooms have en-suite facilities and can be configured as twins, or – in the case of the Knapdale room – a family room.

Enjoy the peace and tranquillity that the Argyll countryside has to offer...a warm welcome awaits you!

We look forward to welcoming you to our home in Knapdale Forest.

From The Stables walkers can pick up forest trails within metres of the front door; alternatively if you prefer to follow prepared/marked routes, there are several promoted by The Forestry Commission to suit all abilities. The forest trails are suitable for mountain biking – and for the more energetic, we are also near to The Fire Tower Trail at Achnabreac. For cycle tourers, a slight detour off of NCN route 78 (Oban-Campbeltown) provides a welcome overnight break at The Stables and takes in the beauty of Loch Sween.

In Knapdale Forest there are numerous species of birds to be seen in their natural environment including buzzard, owl, and woodpecker. For animal lovers, look out for roe deer, red deer, and red squirrel. On Loch Sween sightings of heron and oyster catcher are common, and from the animal kingdom, seals. More elusive are osprey and otter. Within this national scenic area are two national nature reserves managed by Scottish Natural Heritage: Moine Mhor NNR and Taynish NNR.

Horse riding in the area offers many miles of traffic free forestry and hill tracks with breathtaking views of lochs and mountains. Alternatively if fishing is your passion, there are fresh water hill lochs nestled up in Knapdale Forest where a day’s peaceful fishing can be enjoyed. (Sea fishing can also be arranged locally.)

For water enthusiasts, there is the scenic Crinan Canal joining the Sound of Jura with Loch Fyne. From Crinan, boat trips can be arranged to the Gulf of Corryvreckan, or to catch a glimpse of whales or dolphins, or possibly an eagle. Loch Sween and Caol Scotnish are ideal for exploring on a sea kayak.

The landscape of this National Scenic Area is superb and the views can be spectacular. It is no wonder that artists and photographers alike are inspired by the scenery and wildlife.

Archaeologists are well catered for at nearby Kilmartin Glen - Scotland's richest prehistoric landscape with a concentration of cairns, standing stones and other impressive remains which have dotted the landscape from around 3000 B.C. Slightly more recent history is represented by Castle Sween (12th century), Keill’s Chapel and Kilmory Chapel both house a collection of medieval grave slabs.

If all the above sounds slightly exhausting (!) we invite you to relax and unwind in the comfort of our home, The Stables. The spacious lounge is furnished to help you feel at home, with comfortable seating, log burning stove, and a range of books and magazines. The remote controlled music system plays CD's and cassettes.

Breakfast is served in the guest lounge. We would be happy to advise on local pubs/restaurants for your evening meal and make reservations if desired.

The spacious en-suite bedrooms are equipped with satellite TV (freeview) and LCD TV’s coupled with a DVD player. Both rooms have double beds, but can be configured as twins, and the Knapdale can easily be converted to a family room
