Anschen Log House Bed & Breakfast
Its central location makes Fairbanks a great base camp for Alaskan action and adventure.
Whether you are here for business or pleasure, activities abound to occupy your leisure time while you are in Fairbanks. It is a beautiful, friendly town in a very unique area of the country. Locals love their lives here and are usually happy to share information.
The log house is filled with Alaskan history and there are lots of places to sit and appreciate the bountiful nature that is Alaska. Close enough to town to be convenient, but far enough into the woods to assure privacy and in winter, the Aurora.
The larger bedroom ($135.00 per night) has a separate dressing area with sinks and a television. It has a view of the garden. The smaller bedroom room ($108.00 per night) has sliding doors that look out over the Great Room and the fireplace. It's window overlooks the river. Prices include tax.
There is a sauna and a gym with varied exercise equipment. If you must work or check your email, wifi is available throughout the house.
One of the more popular pastimes at Anschen Log House is to sit by the river or up on the deck and wave to the tourists on the riverboats.
The river is a highway in summer for all kinds of watercraft and this straight little stretch in front of the house is often used as a runway for float planes. Watching a talented bush pilot drop between the trees and land on the river is like watching an artist work.
In winter, the river traffic changes to snowmachines, skiers, and dog teams. Iron Dog racers can be seen starting or finishing in alternate years. Borrow a pair of cross country skis from Anschen Log House and enjoy our cold and snow.
Anschen Log House is full of Alaska art, including various Arctic inhabitants, (now deceased). The large log walls seem to call out for such things from owners who find their great size untenable in a normal home.
The moose antlers were a donation from Paul's cousin. Patrick, at age eight, shot his first (and only) moose, a Boone and Crockett record. Two of us struggled to hang the mighty rack. With frequent earthquakes, the couch below has jokingly become known as the 'sofa of death'.
Benson P. Bear is a new addition. He was acquired from my brother's wife's stepmother. I always say that this makes Nelda my 'outlaw'. She and her first husband were given the polar bear hide when they lived in Barrow in the winter of '70-'71. He made the trip to Jonas Brothers in Seattle where he was made into a fine rug. Then he spent the next forty years with Nelda and her family. Nelda simply did not have room for him any longer, but wanted to 'keep him in the family'.
Benson is extremely fragile in his elderly state. I spent the better part of a month repairing his dried out hide and Paul helped to devise a method of hanging that will prevent additional damage to his old self. We are very happy to have him.
