Redgate Smithy
Redgate Smithy is a 200 year old converted Smithy, and is now a friendly and welcoming 4 Star B&B situated just above the beautiful Golitha Falls on the River Fowey, on the southern edge of Bodmin Moor. We have also been awarded the Secta Green Acorn Sustainable Tourism Award (see our website), and are easily accessible from both the A30 down the Fowey valley from the moor, and the A38 either from Liskeard or up from the Glynn Valley from Doublebois.
Our local village is St.Cleer, near Liskeard, and we are very close to Siblyback Lake, and to the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site at Minions. Birds and wildlife abound on and around the moor, and there are excellent walking, riding, hacking, and fishing facilities locally.
The area abounds with nineteenth century industrial archaeology; including the extensive mining remains up on the moor, the Wheal Victoria Copper Mine down by Golitha Falls, and the remains of the fascinating Liskeard and Caradon Railway. This linked the heights of Bodmin Moor, at over 1150 feet above sea level (for the old granite quarries and copper mines), with Looe on the coast. The very pretty Looe Valley Line still runs from Liskeard to Looe. Bodmin Moor is the hidden heart of Cornwall, and it has a rich, rugged and beautiful landscape and heritage; with several ancient neolithic settlements, stone circles, and many other sites of interest.
We have a lovely woodland garden for guests' use, with a patio and other seating areas. Sit back and listen to the buzzards mewing as they soar overhead. We have a large conservatory, and comfortable beamed, well equipped cottage style bedrooms, with their own Freeview Digital TV and tea & coffee making facilities. There are three rooms; a Double Room (ensuite), a 'Garden' Double Room (with its own private bathroom), and a Twin Room (ensuite).
For breakfast, we provide an extensive and tasty menu, cooked to order on the range using local produce, that is served in the light and airy conservatory overlooking the garden. Watch the birds over breakfast!
There are excellent pubs and restaurants in the local and surrounding areas, that we can recommend to you for your evening meals.
